Flamenco del Sol: A Journey of Passion, Culture, and Community Through Dance
In the heart of Central Florida, nestled in the city of Oviedo, there is a vibrant, soul-stirring movement taking place. Flamenco del Sol, a dynamic academy and dance company, is not just teaching flamenco—it’s preserving tradition, fostering community, and transforming lives. In a recent interview, the passionate director of the academy shared insights into their mission, their upcoming showcase, and the deeper impact of this storied art form.
A Showcase of All Ages and Stories
Flamenco del Sol’s upcoming showcase is more than a recital—it’s a celebration of cultural expression spanning generations. “We’re really excited,” the director shared. “This showcase includes our whole academy, from four-year-olds to adults, men and women alike. It features our student groups and our professional dance company.”
What sets this performance apart is its structure. The children will perform pieces they’ve worked on throughout the year, while the company will present a curated “greatest hits” collection from past large-scale productions, such as Dracula, La Casa de Bernarda Alba, and Carmen. These powerful excerpts were originally co-produced with a choreographer from Spain, bringing authentic artistry to the stage.
The Spark: From Sevilla to Central Florida
The director’s journey to flamenco began during a study abroad program through the University of Central Florida. A fateful trip to Sevilla and a night in Triana introduced her to flamenco—and changed her life. “That moment, seeing a flamenco show in Triana, was pivotal. I just knew that’s what I wanted to do.”
Since then, she has poured her heart into cultivating a flamenco community back in Florida, creating a space where passion and purpose intersect.
A Mosaic of Cultures and Commitment
Flamenca del Sol draws students from across the region—Daytona, New Smyrna, Melbourne, Clermont, and beyond. Many are from Hispanic or immigrant backgrounds, seeking a connection to their roots. “For them, flamenco is a memory from childhood, something that reminds them of where they came from,” the director explained. “Everyone here knows why they’re here. This is the art form they love.”
This devotion creates a tight-knit community grounded in mutual respect and cultural appreciation.

No Experience Needed, Only Passion
The academy offers rolling enrollment with classes for all levels, from toddlers to professionals. Every new student is given a free trial class to ensure the environment fits their needs and aspirations. From Saturday morning rehearsals to nightly classes, the opportunities for growth and expression are abundant.
Some students have been part of the school for over a decade. “Most of our teens started when they were six or seven,” the director said. “It’s a journey of a lifetime. You don’t master flamenco in six months—it’s not the destination, it’s the path.”
Beyond Dance: Mental, Emotional, and Spiritual Growth
Flamenco is more than movement—it’s mentally and emotionally enriching. “It’s not like Latin dance. Flamenco originates from Indian dance traditions and it’s intellectually challenging,” the director explained. From complex rhythms to body isolations that require intense focus, the art form exercises both the body and the brain.
Students—even those over 70—find that flamenco improves memory, coordination, and emotional well-being. “People always say, ‘I don’t need therapy if I come here.’ You leave it all on the dance floor.”
A Sensory Spectacle Like No Other
The upcoming showcase promises a breathtaking feast for the senses. With tens of thousands of dollars’ worth of authentic costuming, the visual element alone is dazzling. But the experience goes deeper—audiences will hear the intricate percussion of dancers’ feet, castanets, and traditional Spanish music.
Uniquely, the performance will feature all four schools of Spanish dance:
Flamenco
Escuela Bolera (ballet-like with castanets)
Danza Estilizada (stylized Spanish dance with contemporary and ballet influences)
Folkloric Spanish Dances
“There’s literally something for everyone,” she said. “Even if you’re not familiar with flamenco music, you’ll find something to enjoy—especially the visuals. People will see something they’ve never seen before.”
Education, Inclusion, and Scholarship
One of the most inspiring elements of Flamenco del Sol’s mission is its dedication to outreach and accessibility. Through a strong partnership with United Arts of Central Florida, the academy now works directly with schools, introducing flamenco to students who may never have encountered it otherwise.
This year, students from a local middle and high school—after just five sessions—will perform in the showcase. “It’s amazing what they’ve done in just five classes,” the director beamed. Even more exciting: three scholarships will be awarded, offering an entire year of unlimited classes.
An Invitation to Begin Your Own Flamenco Journey
Whether you’re a seasoned dancer or someone searching for a new creative outlet, Flamenco del Sol offers a place to belong, grow, and be inspired. As the director passionately summarized, “Most people who walk in here—they already know they’re flamenco. It’s in them.”
With open arms and a vibrant heartbeat, Flamenco del Sol invites you to be part of their evolving story.
